New Mexico Standards. What are Syllables? Syllables are parts of words. Each part of a word has one vowel sound in it. Be careful! You may see more than one vowel letter, but still hear only one vowel sound.

NM.I: Reading and listening for comprehension. Students will apply strategies and skills to comprehend information that is read, heard and viewed.
I-D: Acquire reading strategies which include phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.
I-D:1. Decode unknown words using basic elements of phonetic analysis (e.g., common letter-sound relationships) and structural analysis (e.g., syllables, suffixes, prefixes, root words).
