Microscope

A microscope is an essential tool used by biologists to observe and study objects that are too small to be seen with the naked eye. Types of Microscopes

Parts of a Light Microscope

A typical light microscope consists of several main components:

• Objective Lens: The lens closest to the object being observed, which provides the primary magnification.
• Eyepiece (Ocular Lens): The lens closest to the eye, which further magnifies the image created by the objective lens.
• Stage: The platform where the slide containing the specimen is placed for observation.
• Illuminator: The light source that directs light upwards through the diaphragm, the specimen, and the lenses.
• Diaphragm: An adjustable opening under the stage that controls the amount of light reaching the specimen.
• Coarse and Fine Focus Knobs: These knobs are used to bring the specimen into clear view by adjusting the focus.

Using a Microscope

1. Place the microscope on a flat, stable surface and ensure that the lowest-power objective lens is clicked into position.
2. Place the slide containing the specimen on the stage and secure it in place using the stage clips.
3. Use the coarse focus knob to bring the specimen into rough focus, and then use the fine focus knob for precise focusing.
4. Adjust the diaphragm to control the amount of light passing through the specimen for optimal visibility.
5. When finished, rotate the nosepiece to the lowest-power objective lens, remove the slide, and turn off the microscope.
