Machines
A machine is a device that helps to perform work by converting one form of energy to another. Machines make work easier by allowing us to use less force to accomplish a task. There are two main types of machines: simple machines and complex machines.
Simple Machines
Simple machines are the most basic mechanical devices and are the building blocks for all other machines. There are six types of simple machines:
- Lever: A rigid bar that pivots on a fulcrum to help lift or move objects.
- Pulley: A wheel with a groove that holds a rope or belt, used to lift or move heavy objects.
- Wheel and Axle: A wheel attached to a smaller axle, used to transfer force or change the direction of force.
- Inclined Plane: A flat surface that is tilted, allowing objects to be raised or lowered with less force.
- Wedge: A triangular-shaped tool used to split, lift, or separate objects.
- Screw: An inclined plane wrapped around a cylinder, used to hold objects together or lift heavy loads.
Complex Machines
Complex machines are made up of two or more simple machines working together. Examples of complex machines include bicycles, cars, and even the human body. Understanding how simple machines work can help us understand how complex machines function.
