The Carboniferous Period is a geological period that lasted from about 358.9 to 298.9 million years ago. It is known for the abundant deposits of coal that formed during this time, hence the name "Carboniferous" which means "coal-bearing".
The Carboniferous Period was characterized by a warm and humid climate. This climate supported the growth of lush vegetation, particularly forests of giant ferns, club mosses, and horsetails.
The abundant plant life during the Carboniferous Period led to the formation of extensive coal swamps. In addition to the plant life, the period saw the diversification of early amphibians, as well as the emergence of early reptiles.
