Tectonic plates are large, rigid pieces of the Earth'slithosphere that move and interact with each other. The Earth's outer shell is divided into several tectonic plates that fit together like a jigsaw puzzle. These plates are in constant motion, driven by the heat generated from the Earth's core.
There are three main types of plate boundaries where tectonic plates interact:
Divergent Boundaries: At divergent boundaries, tectonic plates move away from each other. This movement can create rift valleys and mid-ocean ridges.
Convergent Boundaries: At convergent boundaries, tectonic plates move towards each other. This can result in the formation of mountain ranges, deep ocean trenches, and volcanic activity.
Transform Boundaries: At transform boundaries, tectonic plates slide past each other horizontally. This movement can causeearthquakes along fault lines.
Use mathematical representations to support and revise explanations based on evidence about factors affecting biodiversity and populations in ecosystems of different scales.
