Mendelian genetics is the study of how genetic traits are inherited according to the laws formulated by Gregor Mendel, an Austrian monk and scientist. Mendel's work laid the foundation for our understanding of genetic inheritance.
Mendel's Laws of Inheritance
Mendel formulated three key laws of inheritance:
Law of Segregation: During gamete formation, the alleles for each gene segregate from each other so that each gamete carries only one allele for each gene.
Law of Independent Assortment:Genes for different traits are inherited independently of each other.
Law of Dominance: In a heterozygote, one allele will be expressed over the other.
