Anatomy is the study of the structure of living organisms. It can be divided into various subfields, such as gross anatomy (the study of structures visible to the naked eye) and microscopic anatomy (the study of structures that can only be observed with the use of a microscope).
Basic Terminology
Anterior: Refers to the front of the body.
Posterior: Refers to the back of the body.
Superior: Indicates a structure is above another structure or closer to the head.
Inferior: Indicates a structure is below another structure or closer to the feet.
Medial: Refers to a structure closer to the midline of the body.
Lateral: Refers to a structure farther away from the midline of the body.
