Types of Leukocytes
There are five main types of leukocytes:
Neutrophils: These are the most abundant type of
white blood cells
and are essential for fighting bacterial infections.
Lymphocytes: They are responsible for specific
immune responses
and include T
cells
, B
cells
, and natural killer
cells
.
Monocytes: These
cells
are crucial for engulfing and digesting pathogens and dead
cells
.
Eosinophils: They are involved in combating parasitic infections and regulating allergic responses.
Basophils: These
cells
release
chemicals
like histamine during allergic reactions and parasitic infections.
Functions of Leukocytes
Leukocytes perform various functions to protect the body from infections and
diseases
, including:
Phagocytosis
: Engulfing and destroying pathogens and foreign particles.
Production of
antibodies
: Lymphocytes produce
antibodies
to neutralize harmful substances.
Release of inflammatory mediators: Basophils and mast
cells
release
chemicals
that promote
inflammation
in response to infections.
Immune
surveillance: Detecting and destroying abnormal or cancerous
cells
in the body.
Study Guide for Leukocytes
To study leukocytes effectively, consider the following key points:
Understand the different types of leukocytes and their respective functions.
Learn about the processes involved in leukocyte activation and recruitment to sites of infection.
Explore the role of leukocytes in the
immune response
to pathogens, including
bacteria
,
viruses
, and
parasites
.
Understand the concepts of
phagocytosis
, antigen presentation, and cytokine production by leukocytes.
Consider the clinical significance of abnormal leukocyte counts and conditions such as leukopenia and leukocytosis.
