Antarctica is the southernmost continent and is situated almost entirely within the Antarctic Circle. It is the fifth-largest continent, covering an area of about 14 million square kilometers. The continent is the coldest, driest, and windiest place on Earth, and it is almost entirely covered by ice that averages about 1.9 kilometers in thickness. The Antarctic Peninsula, which extends towards South America, is the warmest part of the continent and supports the only substantial vegetation.
