Muscle tissue is a specialized tissue that is composed of cells that have the ability to contract. There are three main types of muscle tissue: skeletal, cardiac, and smooth.
Skeletal muscle tissue is attached to the bones and is responsible for movement. It is striated, meaning it has a striped appearance under a microscope, and is under voluntary control.
Cardiac muscle tissue is found in the heart and is responsible for pumping blood throughout the body. It is also striated, but unlike skeletal muscle, it is involuntary, meaning it contracts without conscious control.
Smooth muscle tissue is found in the walls of hollow organs such as the intestines, blood vessels, and bladder. It is not striated and is also under involuntary control.
