Anus

The anus is the opening at the end of the digestive tract through which waste material is eliminated from the body. It is part of the gastrointestinal system and is located at the end of the rectum.

Structure of the Anus

The anus is comprised of two sphincter muscles - the internal anal sphincter and the external anal sphincter. The internal anal sphincter is made of smooth muscle and is under involuntary control, while the external anal sphincter is made of skeletal muscle and is under voluntary control.

Functions of the Anus

The primary function of the anus is to expel feces from the body during defecation. It also plays a role in the regulation of bowel movements through the coordination of the two sphincter muscles.

Common Disorders of the Anus

Some common disorders of the anus include hemorrhoids, anal fissures, and anal abscesses. These conditions can cause discomfort and may require medical treatment.
