The large intestine, also known as the colon, is the final part of the digestive system. It is a long, tube-like organ that is connected to the small intestine on one end and the rectum on the other end. The primary function of the large intestine is to absorbwater and electrolytes from undigested food and to store waste material before it is eliminated from the body.
The large intestine is divided into several parts, including the cecum, ascending colon, transverse colon, descending colon, sigmoid colon, and rectum. The colon is also divided into four layers: the mucosa, submucosa, muscularis externa, and serosa.
