MOUNTAIN

A mountain is a large landform that rises prominently above its surroundings. It is generally steeper than a hill and often has a defined summit. Mountains are formed through tectonic forces or volcanic activity and can be found on every continent.

Formation of Mountains

Mountains are formed through different processes:

Tectonic Forces: Most mountains are formed by the movement of tectonic plates. When two plates collide, they can push the Earth's crust upward, forming mountain ranges.
Volcanic Activity: Some mountains, such as volcanoes, are formed by the accumulation of lava and volcanic materials. These mountains can have a conical shape and may have crater-like depressions at the summit.

Types of Mountains

There are several types of mountains based on their formation:

Fold Mountains: Formed by the folding of rock layers due to tectonic forces. Examples include the Alps and the Himalayas.
Block Mountains: Created when large areas of the Earth's crust are uplifted and tilted. The Sierra Nevada in the United States is an example of a block mountain.
Volcanic Mountains: Formed from the accumulation of volcanic materials. Mount Fuji in Japan and Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania are examples of volcanic mountains.
Dome Mountains: Formed when magma pushes up from below the Earth's crust but doesn't erupt. The Adirondack Mountains in New York are dome mountains.
