The duodenum is the first part of the small intestine, located just after the stomach. It is a crucial part of the digestive system, where the majority of chemical digestion takes place.
The duodenum is approximately 25-30 cm long and is divided into four parts: the superior part, descending part, horizontal part, and ascending part. It is connected to the stomach by the pyloric sphincter and to the jejunum (the second part of the small intestine) by the duodenojejunal flexure.
1. Chemical Digestion: The duodenum receives partially digested food, known as chyme, from the stomach. Here, bile from the liver and digestive enzymes from the pancreas are introduced to further break down the chyme into smaller molecules for absorption.
2. Absorption: While the majority of nutrient absorption occurs in the jejunum and ileum, the duodenum also plays a role in absorbing certain nutrients, such as iron and calcium.
