Asteroids
An asteroid is a small, rocky object that orbits the Sun. Most asteroids are found in the asteroid belt, a region located between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. They are often referred to as minor planets or planetoids. Asteroids are remnants from the early formation of the solar system about 4.6 billion years ago.
Characteristics of Asteroids
- Composition: Most asteroids are made of rock and metal, although some may also contain organic compounds and water ice.
- Size: Asteroids can vary in size from a few meters to several hundred kilometers in diameter.
- Shape: Their shapes can range from irregular to nearly spherical.
- Orbital Period: Asteroids have orbital periods ranging from a few years to several hundred years.
Impact on Earth
Occasionally, asteroids can enter Earth's atmosphere and result in a meteoroid/meteor/meteorite event. The impact of a large asteroid on Earth could have catastrophic consequences, leading to mass extinctions and significant changes in the environment.
