An elliptical galaxy is a type of galaxy having an approximately ellipsoidal shape and a smooth, nearly featureless brightness profile. These galaxies are one of the three main types of galaxies, the other two being spiral and irregular galaxies.
Elliptical galaxies are thought to form through the mergers of smaller galaxies, leading to the redistribution of stars and the disruption of any spiral structure. This process results in a more spheroidal, featureless appearance.
