Light is a form of energy that our eyes can detect. It comes from sources such as the sun, stars, fire, and light bulbs. Light travels in straight lines and can be reflected off surfaces.
Sources of Light
There are natural sources of light, like the sun and stars, and artificial sources of light, like light bulbs and flashlights.
Properties of Light
Reflection: Light can bounce off surfaces, like a mirror reflecting your image.
Transparency: Some materials, like glass and water, allow light to pass through them.
Shadows: When an object blocks light, it creates a shadow on the surface behind it.
How We See Light
Our eyes have a part called the retina which can sense light. When light enters our eyes, it allows us to see the world around us.
Activities to Learn About Light
Experiment with a flashlight and different objects to see how light reflects and creates shadows.
Go on a nature walk and observe how sunlight filters through leaves and other objects.
Observe and discuss the different sources of light in your home and classroom.
The student demonstrates an understanding that all organisms are linked to each other and their physical environments through the transfer and transformation of matter and energy by identifying and sorting examples of living and non-living things in the local environment. (L)
