Lungs

The lungs are an essential part of the respiratory system. They are responsible for the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the body. The human respiratory system consists of two lungs, the left lung and the right lung. The lungs are located in the chest, protected by the rib cage.

Structure of the Lungs

The lungs are made up of a spongy tissue and are divided into sections called lobes. The right lung has three lobes, while the left lung has two lobes. The lungs are surrounded by a thin membrane called the pleura, which helps protect and cushion the lungs.

Function of the Lungs

The main function of the lungs is to facilitate the exchange of gases. When we inhale, the lungs take in oxygen from the air and transfer it into the bloodstream. At the same time, carbon dioxide, a waste product of cellular respiration, is removed from the blood and exhaled out of the body when we breathe out.
