Metamorphism

Metamorphism is the process by which rocks undergo a physical or chemical change due to heat, pressure, or chemical reactions. This process can occur deep within the Earth's crust or at the Earth's surface.

Causes of Metamorphism

Heat: High temperatures from magma or deep burial can cause minerals to recrystallize, resulting in the formation of new minerals.
Pressure: Intense pressure can cause the minerals in a rock to align in specific orientations, creating foliation in metamorphic rocks.
Chemical Reactions: Fluids circulating through rocks can introduce new chemical elements, leading to the formation of new minerals.

Types of Metamorphism

Metamorphism can be categorized into two main types:

Regional Metamorphism: This type occurs over large areas and is typically associated with tectonic plate collisions and mountain-building processes. It results in the formation of foliated rocks such as schist and gneiss.
Contact Metamorphism: This type occurs locally due to the heat and chemical fluids from nearby magma bodies. It often produces non-foliated rocks like marble and quartzite.

Effects of Metamorphism

Metamorphism can lead to changes in the texture, mineral composition, and overall appearance of rocks. It can also contribute to the formation of valuable resources such as marble, slate, and certain types of ore deposits.
