Muscle tissue is a specialized type of tissue that is composed of cells that have the ability to contract. This contraction allows for movement, posture, and the generation of heat in the body. There are three main types of muscle tissue: skeletal, cardiac, and smooth.
Types of Muscle Tissue
Skeletal Muscle: This type of muscle is attached to the bones and is responsible for voluntary movements such as walking, running, and lifting weights. It is striated, meaning it has a striped appearance under a microscope.
Cardiac Muscle: Found only in the heart, cardiac muscle is responsible for pumping blood throughout the body. It is also striated but is involuntary, meaning it contracts without conscious effort.
Smooth Muscle: This type of muscle is found in the walls of hollow organs such as the stomach, intestines, and blood vessels. It is non-striated and also functions involuntarily.
Functions of Muscle Tissue
