A refracting telescope is a type of optical telescope that uses lenses to gather and focus light. It is also known as a dioptric telescope. The primary function of a refracting telescope is to form an image by refracting, or bending, light. This type of telescope was first invented by Dutch eyeglass maker Hans Lippershey in 1608.
When light enters the objective lens of a refracting telescope, it is bent and focused to form an inverted image at the focal point. The eyepiece then magnifies this image, allowing the viewer to see distant objects more clearly.
