Structure of the Small Intestine

The small intestine is divided into three parts: the duodenum, the jejunum, and the ileum. The duodenum is the first and shortest part of the small intestine, followed by the jejunum and then the ileum. The walls of the small intestine are lined with tiny finger-like projections called villi, which increase the surface area for absorption.

Function of the Small Intestine

The main function of the small intestine is to absorb nutrients from the food we eat. The walls of the small intestine contain small blood vessels and lymph vessels that help in the absorption of nutrients such as carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals. The villi and microvilli on the surface of the small intestine increase the absorption surface area, allowing for efficient nutrient uptake.
