Lipids are a diverse group of organic molecules that are insoluble in water but soluble in nonpolar solvents such as ether and chloroform. They play vital roles in the structure and function of living organisms. There are several types of lipids, including fats, phospholipids, and steroids.
Types of Lipids
Fats:Fats, also known as triglycerides, are composed of three fatty acid molecules bonded to a glycerol molecule. They serve as a major energy reserve in the body and also provide insulation and protection for organs.
Phospholipids:Phospholipids are major components of cell membranes. They have a hydrophilic ('water-attracting') head and two hydrophobic ('water-repelling') tails, which help form the lipid bilayer of the cell membrane.
