The Nervous System

The nervous system is a complex network of nerves and cells that transmit signals between different parts of the body. It is responsible for controlling and coordinating all body functions.

Parts of the Nervous System

• Brain: The control center of the nervous system, responsible for processing and interpreting sensory information, and controlling body functions.
• Spinal Cord: A thick bundle of nerves that runs from the base of the brain down the back. It carries signals between the brain and the rest of the body.
• Nerves: Fibers that transmit signals between the brain and the rest of the body.

Types of Nervous System

• Central Nervous System (CNS): Consists of the brain and spinal cord. It processes and interprets sensory information and sends out instructions.
• Peripheral Nervous System (PNS): Consists of the nerves outside of the CNS. It carries messages to and from the CNS.

Nervous System Functions

The nervous system has three main functions:

1. Sensory Function: It gathers information from sensory receptors and transmits it to the CNS.
2. Integration Function: It processes and interprets the sensory information, and decides on an appropriate response.
3. Motors Function: It carries out the response by activating muscles or glands.

• Practice identifying the parts of the brain and their functions.
• Learn about common nervous system disorders and their effects on the body.
• Quiz yourself on the functions of the CNS and PNS.
