Storage: Some roots, such as taproots, store food and nutrients for the plant to use when needed.
Types of Roots
There are two main types of roots:
Taproots: These roots have a main central root from which smaller lateral roots extend. Examples of plants with taproots include carrots and radishes.
Fibrous Roots: These roots are thin and highly branched, forming a dense network close to the soilsurface. Grasses and many other monocots have fibrous roots.
Root Structure
A typical root structure consists of several parts:
Root Cap: Protects the growing tip of the root and helps it push through the soil.
Root Hairs: Tiny, hair-like structures that increase the surface area for absorption of water and nutrients.
Meristem: The region of actively dividing cells responsible for root growth.
