The lungs are a vital part of the respiratory system, responsible for the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the body. They are essential for the process of breathing, which allows the body to take in oxygen and release carbon dioxide.
The lungs are located in the chest and are protected by the rib cage. Each lung is divided into sections called lobes - the right lung has three lobes and the left lung has two lobes. The lungs are made up of airways, blood vessels, and small air sacs called alveoli.
When we breathe in, the air enters the body through the nose or mouth, travels down the windpipe, and into the bronchial tubes in the lungs. The bronchial tubes then divide into smaller tubes called bronchioles, which end in clusters of alveoli. It is in the alveoli where the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide takes place.
