Composition

Composition refers to the combination of different elements to form a whole. In the context of science, composition can refer to the makeup of substances, such as the elements that make up a compound or the components of a mixture.

Types of Composition

There are two main types of composition: mixtures and compounds.

Mixtures

A mixture is made up of two or more substances that are not chemically combined. Each substance in the mixture retains its own properties and can be separated from the other substances. Mixtures can be further classified as homogeneous or heterogeneous.

• Homogeneous mixtures are uniform in composition, meaning the components are evenly distributed throughout the mixture. Examples include salt water and air.
• Heterogeneous mixtures have uneven distribution of components, and the different substances can be seen as separate phases. Examples include salad dressing and granite.

Compounds

A compound is a substance made up of two or more different elements that are chemically bonded together in a fixed ratio. Compounds have properties that are different from the elements that make them up, and they can only be separated into their individual elements through chemical reactions.
