Structure of Mitochondria:
- Outer membrane: The outermost layer of the mitochondria.
- Inner membrane: This membrane is folded into structures called cristae, which increase the surface area for ATP production.
- Matrix: The innermost part of the mitochondria where the citric acid cycle (Krebs cycle) takes place.
Functions of Mitochondria:
- ATP production: Mitochondria convert nutrients into ATP through a series of biochemical reactions, including the citric acid cycle and oxidative phosphorylation.
- Cellular respiration: They are involved in the process of cellular respiration, which involves the breakdown of glucose to release energy.
- Regulation of cell metabolism: Mitochondria play a role in regulating cellular metabolism and apoptosis (programmed cell death).
Mitochondrial DNA:
Mitochondria contain their own DNA, known as mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). This DNA is inherited maternally and encodes for some of the proteins essential for mitochondrial function.
Disorders associated with Mitochondria:
Mitochondrial dysfunction can lead to various disorders, including mitochondrial myopathy, encephalopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episodes (MELAS) syndrome and Leigh syndrome.
