Pongo is the genus of the great apes known as orangutans. There are three species of orangutans within the Pongo genus: the Bornean orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus), the Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abelii), and the recently identified Tapanuli orangutan (Pongo tapanuliensis).
Physical Characteristics
Orangutans are characterized by their shaggy reddish-brown hair and long arms.
They are the largest arboreal animals, spending most of their time in trees.
Adult males develop large cheek pads, called flanges, and a throat pouch as they reach maturity.
Orangutans are found in the rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra. The Tapanuli orangutan is specifically found in the Batang Toru forest in North Sumatra.
Orangutans are critically endangered due to habitat loss, poaching, and the illegal pet trade. Conservation efforts are underway to protect their remaining habitats and rehabilitate individuals rescued from the pet trade.
Develop and use models of Earth’s interior composition to illustrate the resulting magnetic field (e.g., magnetic poles) and to explain its measureable effects (e.g., protection from cosmic radiation).
