The digestive system is a group of organs working together to convert food into energy and basic nutrients to feed the entire body. Food passes through a long tube inside the body known as the alimentary canal or the gastrointestinal tract (GI tract).
The digestive process begins in the mouth where food is chewed and mixed with saliva. It then travels down the esophagus to the stomach where it is further broken down by stomach acids. The partially digested food then moves to the small intestine where it is mixed with bile and digestive enzymes to extract nutrients. The remaining undigested food then enters the large intestine where water and minerals are absorbed before the waste is eliminated from the body through the rectum and anus.
