Vertebrates are animals with a backbone, or spinal column, that forms the supporting structure of the body. They are part of the phylumChordata, which includes animals with a notochord (a flexible rod that runs along the length of the body) at some stage of their development. Vertebrates are a diverse group that includes fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals.
