Structure of
Axon
Terminal
The
axon
terminal consists of several key components:
Synaptic Vesicles:
Small sacs within the
axon
terminal that store
neurotransmitters
.
Neurotransmitters
:
Chemical
messengers that are released from the synaptic vesicles and transmit signals to the next
neuron
.
Synaptic Cleft:
The small gap between the
axon
terminal of one
neuron
and the
dendrites
of the next
neuron
.
Receptor Sites:
Protein
molecules
located on the
surface
of the
dendrites
that bind to specific
neurotransmitters
, initiating a response in the postsynaptic
neuron
.
Function of
Axon
Terminal
The primary function of the
axon
terminal is to transmit
electrical
signals, in the form of
action potentials
, from one
neuron
to another. When an
action potential
reaches the
axon
terminal, it triggers the release of
neurotransmitters
from the synaptic vesicles. These
neurotransmitters
then travel across the synaptic cleft and bind to receptor sites on the
dendrites
of the postsynaptic
neuron
, leading to the generation of new
electrical
signals in the postsynaptic
neuron
.
Study Guide
To understand the concept of
axon
terminals effectively, consider the following study guide:
Describe the structure of an
axon
terminal and its key components.
Explain the role of synaptic vesicles and
neurotransmitters
in the
transmission
of signals at the synapse.
Discuss the process of
signal transmission
across the synaptic cleft and the role of receptor sites on the postsynaptic
neuron
.
Compare and contrast the functions of
axon
terminals and
dendrites
in neuronal
communication
.
Explore the significance of
axon
terminals in the overall functioning of the
nervous system
.
.
