The Cenozoic Era is the current geological era and is also known as the "Age of Mammals." It began about 65 million years ago and is divided into three periods: the Paleogene, Neogene, and Quaternary periods.
The Paleogene period lasted from about 65 to 23 million years ago. It is further divided into the Paleocene, Eocene, and Oligocene epochs. During this period, mammals diversified and evolved rapidly, taking advantage of the ecological niches left vacant by the extinction of the dinosaurs.
The Neogene period lasted from about 23 to 2.6 million years ago. It is further divided into the Miocene and Pliocene epochs. This period saw the continued diversification of mammals, as well as the emergence of early humans in the later stages.
The Quaternary period began about 2.6 million years ago and continues to the present day. It is divided into the Pleistocene and Holocene epochs. This period is marked by the expansion and diversification of humans, as well as the last Ice Age and the development of modern ecosystems.
