Phagocytosis
Phagocytosis is the process by which certain cells engulf and digest particles or other cells. It is an important mechanism used by the immune system to remove pathogens and cellular debris from the body.
Process of Phagocytosis
The process of phagocytosis involves several steps:
- Chemotaxis: The phagocyte is attracted to the site of infection or cellular debris by chemical signals.
- Adherence: The phagocyte attaches to the particle or cell to be engulfed.
- Ingestion: The phagocyte engulfs the particle or cell, forming a phagosome.
- Phagolysosome formation: The phagosome fuses with lysosomes, forming a phagolysosome, where the engulfed material is broken down by enzymes.
- Digestion: The engulfed material is digested within the phagolysosome.
- Exocytosis: The indigestible material is expelled from the phagocyte through exocytosis.
Types of Phagocytes
Several types of cells are capable of phagocytosis, including:
- Neutrophils
- Macrophages
- Monocytes
- Dendritic cells
