What is Matter?
Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. It can exist in various states such as solid, liquid, or gas.
Properties of Matter
Matter has different properties such as:
- Mass: The amount of matter in an object
- Volume: The amount of space matter occupies
- Density: The mass of matter per unit volume
- Solubility: The ability of matter to dissolve in a solvent
- Conductivity: The ability of matter to conduct heat or electricity
Matter can exist in three main states:
- Solid: Definite shape and volume
- Liquid: Definite volume, but takes the shape of its container
- Gas: No definite shape or volume, fills the entire space of its container
Matter can undergo physical and chemical changes:
- Physical Change: Alters the form of matter without changing its chemical composition (e.g. melting, freezing)
- Chemical Change: Results in the formation of new substances with different properties (e.g. rusting, burning)
Classification of Matter
Matter can be classified into pure substances and mixtures:
- Pure Substance: Made of only one type of particle, either an element or a compound
- Mixture: Contains two or more substances physically combined, and can be further classified into homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures
