The duodenum is divided into four parts: the superior part, descending part, horizontal part, and ascending part. It is approximately 25-30 cm long and is C-shaped, surrounding the head of the pancreas.
Functions of the Duodenum
Receives Chyme: The duodenum receives partially digested food, known as chyme, from the stomach.
Neutralizes Gastric Acid: The acidic chyme entering the duodenum is neutralized by bicarbonate secreted by the pancreas, creating a more favorable environment for the action of digestive enzymes.
From Molecules to Organisms: Structures and Processes
Students who demonstrate understanding can:
Develop and use a model to illustrate the hierarchical organization of interacting systems that provide specific functions within multicellular organisms.
Plan and conduct an investigation to provide evidence that feedback mechanisms maintain homeostasis.
