In Earth Science, a closed system refers to a system in which energy can enter or leave, but matter cannot. This means that while energy such as heat and light can be exchanged with the surroundings, the actual materials and substances within the system are contained and do not flow in or out.
Energy Exchange: In a closed system, energy can be transferred in and out. For example, the Earth is a closed system with respect to energy, as it receives energy from the Sun and radiates energy back into space.
MatterConservation: The total amount of matter within a closed system remains constant. For instance, a sealed terrarium can be considered a closed system, as the water and nutrients cycle within the container, but no new matter is added or removed.
