The gas giants are the four outer planets in our solar system: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. These planets are composed mainly of hydrogen and helium, and are much larger than the terrestrial planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars).
Gas giants are believed to have formed further from the Sun where the solar nebula was cooler, allowing hydrogen and helium to condense into solid cores. These cores then gravitationally attracted the surrounding gases, eventually forming the massive planets we see today.
Planet | Diameter (km) | Distance from Sun (AU) |
---|---|---|
Jupiter | 139,820 | 5.2 |
Saturn | 116,460 | 9.5 |
Uranus | 50,724 | 19.2 |
Neptune | 49,244 | 30.1 |
