Modal Verbs Study Guide

1. Can: Used to express ability or possibility. It can also be used to ask for permission.
   Example: I can swim.
2. Could: Similar to "can," but it is used to express past ability or to make a polite request.
   Example: I could run fast when I was younger.
3. May: Used to ask for or give permission, or to express possibility.
   Example: May I go to the restroom?
4. Must: Indicates necessity or obligation.
   Example: You must finish your homework before watching TV.
5. Should: Used to give advice or make a recommendation.
   Example: You should study for the test.
6. Would: Often used to make polite requests or to express preferences.
   Example: Would you pass me the salt, please?
7. Shall: Used to make suggestions or offers, and in formal language to express future action.
   Example: Shall we go for a walk?
8. Will: Used to express future action or to make promises.
   Example: I will help you with your project.
