Adverb Study Guide

An adverb is a part of speech that modifies or describes a verb, adjective, or another adverb. Adverbs often describe how, when, where, or to what extent something is done.

Types of Adverbs

There are several types of adverbs:

• Adverbs of manner: These adverbs describe how an action is done. For example: quickly, slowly, carefully, etc.
• Adverbs of time: These adverbs describe when an action takes place. For example: yesterday, soon, now, etc.
• Adverbs of place: These adverbs describe where an action takes place. For example: here, there, everywhere, etc.
• Adverbs of frequency: These adverbs describe how often an action takes place. For example: always, often, never, etc.
• Adverbs of degree: These adverbs describe the extent or degree to which an action is done. For example: very, too, quite, etc.

Placement of Adverbs

Adverbs can be placed in different parts of a sentence:

• Adverbs of manner usually come after the verb or object. For example: She sang beautifully.
• Adverbs of time can be placed at the beginning or end of a sentence. For example: Yesterday, I went to the park. OR I went to the park yesterday.
• Adverbs of place can come at the beginning or end of a sentence. For example: There are my keys. OR My keys are there.
• Adverbs of frequency usually come before the main verb. For example: He always eats breakfast.
• Adverbs of degree can be placed before the adjective or adverb they are modifying. For example: She is very happy. OR The car is too fast.

• He quickly ran to catch the bus. (Adverb of manner)
• We will go to the beach tomorrow. (Adverb of time)
• The cat is hiding under the table. (Adverb of place)
