Linking Verbs
What are Linking Verbs?
Linking verbs, also known as copulas, are verbs that connect the subject of a sentence to a subject complement. They do not show action, but instead link the subject to additional information about the subject. Common linking verbs include "is", "am", "are", "was", "were", "seem", "become", "appear", and "feel".
Examples of Linking Verbs:
- The flowers are beautiful. (In this example, "are" is the linking verb connecting "flowers" to the subject complement "beautiful".)
- She became a doctor. (In this example, "became" is the linking verb connecting "she" to the subject complement "doctor".)
- The cake smells delicious. (In this example, "smells" is the linking verb connecting "cake" to the subject complement "delicious".)
Identifying Linking Verbs:
Linking verbs can often be identified by replacing the verb with "is" or "are" and checking if the sentence still makes sense. If it does, then the verb is likely a linking verb. Additionally, linking verbs are often followed by adjectives or nouns that rename or describe the subject.
