What are Conjunctions?

Conjunctions are words that connect words, phrases, or clauses in a sentence.

Types of Conjunctions

There are three main types of conjunctions:

• Coordinating Conjunctions: These connect words, phrases, or clauses of equal importance. The mnemonic "FANBOYS" can help remember these: For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So.
• Subordinating Conjunctions: These connect an independent clause with a dependent clause. Some examples include: because, although, if, when, while, etc.
• Correlative Conjunctions: These are pairs of conjunctions that work together, such as either/or, neither/nor, not only/but also.

Usage of Conjunctions

Conjunctions are used to join words, phrases, or clauses to make a compound sentence or to show the relationship between the joined elements.

Examples

Here are a few examples of conjunctions in sentences:

• Coordinating Conjunction: I like coffee and tea.
• Subordinating Conjunction: I will go for a walk if the weather is nice.
• Correlative Conjunction: You can either study for the test or go to the movies.
