Noun Study Guide
Definition
A noun is a word that represents a person, place, thing, or idea. Nouns are used to name and identify people, objects, places, and concepts.
Types of Nouns
There are several types of nouns:
- Proper Nouns: Names of specific people, places, or things. They are always capitalized (e.g. Mary, London, Eiffel Tower).
- Common Nouns: Names of general items, not specific ones (e.g. dog, city, building).
- Concrete Nouns: Names of things that can be perceived by the senses (e.g. book, tree, apple).
- Abstract Nouns: Names of ideas, qualities, or concepts (e.g. love, courage, freedom).
- Collective Nouns: Names of groups of people or things (e.g. team, family, herd).
Functions of Nouns
Nouns can serve different functions in a sentence:
- Subject: The noun that performs the action in the sentence (e.g. The cat chased the mouse).
- Direct Object: The noun that receives the action of the verb (e.g. She read a book).
- Indirect Object: The noun that receives the direct object (e.g. He gave me a gift).
- Object of the Preposition: The noun that follows a preposition (e.g. They went to the park).
Plural and Possessive Forms
Nouns can also have different forms:
- Plural: Most nouns form their plural by adding -s or -es (e.g. books, boxes).
- Possessive: To show ownership or relationship, nouns can be made possessive by adding an apostrophe and an s (e.g. the dog's tail, the students' books).
