Dividing

Dividing is the process of splitting a number into equal parts or groups. It is the opposite of multiplication. When we divide one number by another, we are finding out how many times the second number can fit into the first number.

Basic Division Terminology:

• Dividend: The number being divided.
• Divisor: The number by which the dividend is divided.
• Quotient: The result of the division.
• Remainder: The amount left over when the dividend is not perfectly divisible by the divisor.

Steps for Long Division:

1. Place the dividend inside the long division symbol (÷) and the divisor outside the symbol.
2. Divide the leftmost digit of the dividend by the divisor. Write the quotient above the dividend.
3. Multiply the divisor by the quotient and write the result below the dividend.
4. Subtract the result from the dividend and bring down the next digit.
5. Repeat the process until there are no more digits to bring down, or until the remainder is zero.

Divisibility Rules:

Divisibility rules are helpful shortcuts to determine if a number can be divided evenly by another number without actually performing the division.

• 2: A number is divisible by 2 if its last digit is even (0, 2, 4, 6, or 8).
• 3: A number is divisible by 3 if the sum of its digits is divisible by 3.
• 5: A number is divisible by 5 if its last digit is 0 or 5.
• 10: A number is divisible by 10 if it ends in 0.

Practice Problems:

1. Divide 648 by 9.
2. Find the quotient and remainder when 357 is divided by 6.
3. Determine if 4,893 is divisible by 3.
