What is a Year?

A year is a unit of time that is based on the Earth's orbit around the sun. It is the period of time it takes for the Earth to complete one orbit around the sun. The length of a year is approximately 365.25 days. To account for the extra fraction of a day, we add an extra day to the calendar every four years, creating a leap year with 366 days.

Types of Years

There are different types of years used in calendars:

Solar Year: Also known as the tropical year, it is the time taken for the Earth to complete one orbit around the sun. It is approximately 365.2422 days long.
Sidereal Year: This is the time it takes for the Earth to complete one orbit around the sun relative to the stars. It is about 20 minutes longer than the solar year.
Lunar Year: Also known as the lunar calendar year, it is based on the cycles of the moon and is approximately 354.37 days long.

Measuring Years

Months: A year is divided into 12 months, with varying lengths.
Weeks: A year consists of 52 weeks, with some days left over. This is why we have leap years.
Days: A regular year has 365 days, while a leap year has 366 days.
