Days - Study Guide
What is a Day?
A day is a unit of time based on the rotation of the Earth. It is defined as the period of time it takes for the Earth to complete one full rotation on its axis.
Measuring Days
There are different ways to measure days:
- Solar Day: This is the time it takes for the Sun to return to the same position in the sky. It is about 24 hours long.
- Sidereal Day: This is the time it takes for a specific star (other than the Sun) to return to the same position in the sky. It is about 23 hours, 56 minutes, and 4 seconds long.
Division of Days
A day is divided into smaller units:
- Hour: 1 day is equal to 24 hours.
- Minute: 1 hour is equal to 60 minutes.
- Second: 1 minute is equal to 60 seconds.
Days of the Week
There are 7 days in a week:
- Monday
- Tuesday
- Wednesday
- Thursday
- Friday
- Saturday
- Sunday
Calculating Days
To calculate the number of days between two dates, you can use the formula:
Number of days = (End Date - Start Date) + 1
Practice Problems
1. How many hours are there in 3 days?
Answer: 3 days * 24 hours/day = 72 hours
2. What is the total number of minutes in a week?
Answer: 7 days * 24 hours/day * 60 minutes/hour = 10,080 minutes
