Equations
An equation is a mathematical statement that shows the equality of two expressions. It consists of two sides, with an equal sign between them.
Components of an Equation
An equation has the following components:
- Left-hand side (LHS): This is the expression on the left side of the equal sign.
- Right-hand side (RHS): This is the expression on the right side of the equal sign.
- Equal sign: This symbol (=) indicates that the LHS is equal to the RHS.
Types of Equations
There are different types of equations, including:
- Linear equations: These equations involve variables raised to the power of 1 and have a constant term.
- Quadratic equations: These equations involve variables raised to the power of 2 and have a constant term.
- Exponential equations: These equations involve variables as exponents.
Solving Equations
To solve an equation means to find the value of the variable that makes the equation true. The goal is to isolate the variable on one side of the equation.
Example:
Solve the equation 2x + 5 = 11 for x.
Step 1: Subtract 5 from both sides: 2x = 11 - 5 = 6
Step 2: Divide both sides by 2: x = 6 ÷ 2 = 3
So, the solution to the equation is x = 3.
Equations are fundamental in mathematics and are used to model and solve various real-world problems.
