Addition
Addition is a fundamental arithmetic operation that combines two or more numbers to find their total. It is denoted by the "+" symbol.
Example:
If you have 2 apples and you add 3 more apples, the total number of apples you have is 2 + 3 = 5.
Properties of Addition:
- Commutative Property: a + b = b + a
- Associative Property: (a + b) + c = a + (b + c)
- Identity Property: a + 0 = a
Adding Numbers:
To add numbers, align the digits by place value (ones with ones, tens with tens, etc.) and then add the corresponding place values together. If the sum is 10 or more, regroup the extra ones as necessary.
Notation:
In addition, the numbers being added are called "addends" and the result is called the "sum."
