Urethra
The urethra is a tube that connects the urinary bladder to the urinary meatus for the removal of fluids from the body. It serves as the passageway for urine to be excreted from the body.
Anatomy of the Urethra
The urethra is divided into two main parts:
- Male Urethra: In males, the urethra is longer and runs through the prostate gland and the penis. It is divided into three parts - prostatic urethra, membranous urethra, and spongy (penile) urethra.
- Female Urethra: In females, the urethra is shorter and is located anterior to the vagina. It is relatively straight and opens to the outside of the body.
Functions of the Urethra
The primary function of the urethra is to expel urine from the bladder. In males, the urethra also serves as the passageway for semen during ejaculation.
Urethral Disorders
Some common disorders of the urethra include urinary tract infections (UTIs), urethral strictures (narrowing of the urethra), and urethritis (inflammation of the urethra).
