Power is the ability to do work or make things happen. In science, we use the word "power" to describe how fast work is done or energy is transferred.
Types of Power
There are different types of power, including:
Human Power: This is the power that comes from the muscles in our bodies. For example, when we run, jump, or lift things, we are using human power.
Natural Power: This is the power that comes from nature, such as the power of the wind, water, or sunlight. Wind turbines, water wheels, and solar panels are examples of natural power sources.
Mechanical Power: This is the power produced by machines, like cars, bicycles, and tools. Machines help us do work more easily and quickly.
How is Power Measured?
Power is measured in units called watts (W). The more watts a device has, the more power it can produce. For example, a light bulb with a higher wattage will be brighter than one with a lower wattage.
Study Guide for Power
Here are some questions to help you study the topic of power:
What is power?
What are the different types of power?
How is power related to doing work?
What unit is used to measure power?
Give examples of devices or machines that produce power.
The student demonstrates an understanding that all organisms are linked to each other and their physical environments through the transfer and transformation of matter and energy by identifying and sorting examples of living and non-living things in the local environment. (L)
